OK...

Experienced moms, I need your help. Josh and I are trying to decide whether we should buy a Beckham a "big boy bed" and use the crib we have for the new baby, or buy another crib and keep Beckham in his crib as long as possible.

My initial thought is to buy a bed for Beckham and use the crib for the new baby. It's probably the most cost effective thing to do, and part of me thinks having 2 cribs is a little unnecessary. On the other hand, Beckham has never crawled out of his crib, and with as short as he is, I really don't think he will be able to crawl out for awhile. So by putting him a big bed, I am afraid, will only allow him to get out in the middle of the night and come in our room to wake us up. NOT FUN!! He will only be 26 months when the new baby is born, so I also feel like he will have plenty of time before he has to be out of a crib.

SO has anyone else been here? I don't think I would buy a brand new crib, I would try to find one at a consignment sale/store. And if I could find a convertible crib at a reasonable price, then both kids would have cribs that would eventually be toddler beds then big beds. But is have 2 cribs dumb? HELP!!

LOVE your new blog design, btw. YES, we have DEFINITELY been in the place you are right now. We actually moved Makayla to a toddler bed when she was about 16 months. She really didn't have a hard time adjusting- she only wandered into our room for the first couple of nights and then just got used to it. And we converted Bryn's bed into a toddler bed for her when she was about 18 months. We didn't have any problems with either of them, but every kid is different. Maybe you should try it a couple of months before the baby comes, just to make sure. Hope that helps, love you!!

First of all, shame on you for thinking that only mothers can respond. :) Second, I don't think it is a bad idea to get another crib if it makes you more comfortable...but get the kind that convert to little kids beds. That way you can move him into a bed when you are comfortable with it as opposed to being forced to do it just because baby #2 has arrived.

That's my thought at least. It probably sucks because I'm not a mom. LOL jk

We're going to go ahead and buy a big girl bed and just use the bed rails. We are planning to get a gate to put at her doorway to help keep her in there until she is used to it. I'm sure if she wants us she'll just stand at the gate and yell. :o) I just thought it might make her feel special to have something different.

Hey Angela,

That's a tough one. Our boys both transitioned really easily at 24 months. You do give up the freedom of letting them play for a while in their crib before you go get them up. You always have a couple months of baby in pack'n'play/bassinet too. Tell Josh to ask Kevin about holding on to Landon's door for an hour so he would stop coming out:) It only took one night, but it was hard for mommy:)

Girl...I have been in your exact shoes!! We actually borrowed a crib for Blake so I could keep Mallory in hers a little longer...so hit up some friends that aren't done having kids but aren't using their crib right now!! We moved Mal when she was about 25 months old (b/c the people needed their crib back!)and she did great. She did wonder in our room a couple of nights, but we "super-nanny"ed it and just put her back in there any time she walked in there and it only took a couple of nights and she has slept all night (and even sleeps later) in her big girl bed!! So, I think either way will be fine...just see how easy it would be to find/buy another crib and if it seems too difficult, then take another route!!!

hey, we actually moved Morgan to a toddler bed when Levi was born. she was only 12 months. we just keep a gate up so that she can get up and have her door open, but she's stuck in there. when i get up i go and take the gate down and wait for her to wake up. she LOVES her big girl bed..
